VI4 becomes vSphere?

Posted under Church IT, Random Thought

I just read about this here, but google vSphere for full blogosphere (hehe) treatment on the subject. So the product that would have naturally been called ‘VMware Infrastructure 4′ will be called ‘vSphere’. Hmmm… upon hearing it for the first time, I had a few thoughts:

“Don’t vSphere the Reaper…”

“The only thing we have to vSphere is vSphere itself…”

“vSphere: The OS with Big B….”  Errr…. scratch that one. Oops! That made it worse… I will preemptively apologize to those I’ve just offended. Sorry!

So, what’s the point of all that? Nothing, really. Just my silly ramblings over what I consider a silly name change. But I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a creative marketing type, so maybe it will eventually make sense and roll off the tongue without sounding weird. [insert rimshot]

[tap tap tap] Is this thing on?

WSUS Missing Feature?

Posted under Church IT, Random Thought

wsus Is it just me, or is WSUS missing a needed feature? If an update synchronizes with the server and you then approve it, you get the usual “The files for this update have not been downloaded…” message while WSUS is downloading the files. But there seems to be no way to determine how long the download will take or how far it is in the process!

Yeah, 95% of the time I don’t care when the update will come down and just let WSUS do its thing without a second thought, but there are times like now when I have approved an update for a server product and want to apply it now, but WSUS inexplicably gives no indication as to how long the download will take and how far it’s gotten. Would it have been too much for Microsoft to add a graph (not that MS installation graphs have ever been remotely accurate, but still…. lie to me!) Even fake information is better than none at all! (And yes, I know you can configure WSUS to download unapproved updates so they are “ready” when you approve, but that uses disk space I’m not willing to give up).

If I’m an idiot and just can’t see this obvious feature, please educate me!

Here I Am

Posted under Random Thought

Yeah, I’m late to the blogging party… so sue me. To be fair, prior to this I did most of my “blog-like written communications” as a Novell Support Sysop, which I did (profusely) for nearly ten years. But now that I’m at WCCC and no longer in a Novell environment, I thought I should have a blog of my own. This is where I will write anything that comes to mind that I think someone, somewhere might find useful. Your mileage may vary. Oh, and I like ellipses… (as well as parenthetical text) if you haven’t noticed that already. That’s just the way I roll…

For the full skinny on who I am and what I do, see my Who? page.
